McCrackin knew exactly what to do: Develop a way to help autistic children stay safe around the water.

After a review process, her project — the Autism Drowning Prevention Resource Kit — was approved in October, 2021.....

When Mintz first met with McCrackin to discuss the Autism Drowning Prevention Resource Kit, McCrackin explained that drowning is a top cause of death for children with autism. In fact, the National Autism Association reports accidental drownings as the cause of 91 percent of deaths reported in children with autism who are younger than 15 and involved in a wandering accident.

McCrackin also pointed out that 30 percent of parents of children with autism report a close call with drowning.

“That is such a high number,” Mintz said. “Is there a way to make it so parents never have a close call?”

McCrackin’s kit takes a multifaceted approach, informing parents while also providing clinicians with resources.....

Parents will be surveyed every three months for a year about their experience. That data will guide McCrackin’s future implementation of the Autism Drowning Prevention Resource Kit.
