Elderly man killed, 3 hurt in "horrific" San Antonio dog attack

BY FARIS TANYOS

FEBRUARY 24, 2023 / 10:34 PM / CBS NEWS

An elderly man was killed and three others injured in a violent dog attack in a residential neighborhood of San Antonio Friday afternoon, authorities said, with responding firefighters themselves having to fight off the dogs to reach the victims.

At about 1:45 p.m. local time, firefighters dispatched to a report of a dog bite arrived to find an elderly man "being dragged by a dog," San Antonio Fire Chief Charles Hood told reporters. ... "They could see him completely bloodied before they got off the fire truck," Hood said.

Hood, who called the scene "horrific," said the firefighters had to fend off multiple pit bulls with "pick-axes and pipe poles" just to reach the two victims, a man in his 80s and a woman. The attack occurred on a sidewalk, Hood said.

The man was given blood at the scene and then rushed to a hospital, where he died, Hood said. The woman was hospitalized in critical condition. Their names were not released.

Hope the owners are charged in the guy's death.

Pits aren't horrible unless they're bred and trained to be horrible.

It isn't all the dogs' fault, it is the owner who trained it. Bad owner! Go straignt to jail and stay there a long time.

Dogs can't open doors themselves* to be let out in unfenced places.

* I did have a dog once who could open the fence gate, which was one of those chainlink fence latches. Of course the second we learned he could do this, we made sure the gate was secured another way. No excuse for this on the owners' part, and the dogs were just doing what they'd been given license to do by their owners.

This is not the first time ACS has been called to that property for reports of a dog bite.

At least two of the dogs were involved in “confirmed bite cases” in January and also in September 2021, according to the city news release. The injuries in those cases were described as “moderate or mild,” and the individuals involved “declined to file a dangerous dog designation,” the release said. The animals were returned to their owner after a quarantine period in accordance with state law.

A dangerous dog designation would have imposed several requirements, including that the owners keep the animals in a secured enclosure, get a $100,000 liability insurance policy and muzzle the dogs when they were outside. Special warning signs also would have been required.

In addition to the bite cases, ACS has been called to the property several times in the last two years for calls about neglect, aggression and loose animals, ACS Director Shannon Sims said.

In Texas, a dog can't be taken from the owner unless someone files charges. The person who is bit, must file charges, but are often intimidated . Texas is a pro- vicious animal state.
