Casey Garcia walked into a Texas middle school in 2021 wearing a yellow Marvel hoodie, Nike sneakers and a black face mask. She attended classes that day until school was nearly over but during one of the last periods, a teacher noticed she wasnt a 13-year-old student; she was a 30-year-old mother impersonating her daughter.
School employees reported Garcia to authorities a few days later, and she was ultimately charged with criminal trespassing. But Garcia who posted a video of her day at school that quickly went viral said in a follow-up video that she was only trying to expose what she considered inadequate protocols meant to protect students from school shootings.
Last week, an El Paso County criminal jury found Garcia guilty of criminal trespassing a misdemeanor and sentenced the 33-year-old to six months of probation. Garcia faces a $700 probated fine and must serve 100 hours of community service.
Theresa Caballero, an attorney representing Garcia, told The Washington Post that she was pleased Garcia avoided a prison sentence. But Caballero also said she was upset that Garcia was convicted, saying she wanted only to make a point about improving school safety.
