From Dusk Till Dawn: The GOP's Embrace of Trumpism in Texas.

On Monday, I said, Its important to remember that primary turnout doesnt dictate November turnout. Thats true, and Democrats need to keep that in mind when analyzing the primary results. Republicans did show up in the primary election in higher numbers than Democrats. But all of their leadership was heavily invested in the primaries and ousting the last few sane Republicans.
Of all the takeaways from the 2024 primary elections, the biggest one should be this: Texas Republicans are Trump Republicans. As terrible as it sounds, over the next several months, Democrats and non-voters in the Lone Star State are going to have to have a come-to-Jesus moment and accept that their neighbors hate them and want to do them harm.
Trump won big in Texas, and so did Trumpism. While in other states, weve seen Trump barely win 60% - 70% of the primary vote, he won 77% here in Texas. And thats considering that probably 5% of Nikki Haleys voters were Democrats.

(11,454 posts)Liberals in red states can't just up and move anywhere. I could never afford to live in California or New York. Even the cost of living in most northern states is more than I could afford on my fixed income.
Yeah, I know my neighbors would get vicious if they knew I was an atheist, socialist, liberal. But to move would put me into poverty.

I used to get along with my neighbors in a casual way. Now I avoid them.
Putting a trump sign in your yard is an advertisement for me to stay away!

(11,454 posts)They are not Trump supporters. They are voting for an imaginary person that Texas politicians, Fox and the GOP likes to fluff up and lie about. They think they are voting for someone who won't kill them or put their liberal, Jewish, Black or Asian neighbors in concentration camps.
They have forgotten how many Texans were killed by the Stinking Nazis' criminal negligence in the pandemic. And no one reminds them.

(28,833 posts)it's always been very pro-Trump. Cruz beat him in 2016, of course, but Trump still got more than a quarter of the vote, in a state where conservative voters are often quite hostile to outsiders and the Northeast.
I live in a very blue district - about 60/40 Dem - and the Trump presence is still very palpable.
"probably 5% of Nikki Haleys voters were Democrats."
I think it's probably not that high. Crossover votes are almost always more hype than reality, with a couple of notable exceptions (Liz Cheney in WY, etc.)

(830 posts)I live in a ruby red county in Texas. The last time a Democratic Presidential primary candidate won Guadalupe County was in 1964 when LBJ won. Only 20 percent of registered voters cast a primary ballot here. The majority of votes were cast on Republican ballots. Nikki Hayley and Uncommitted won 20 percent of the votes. Haley/Uncommitted percentage was about the same state wide. In 2020 Trump beat Biden state wide by 200,000 votes or so. He cant afford to lose the Haley/Uncommitted voters. I did not know Uncommitted was a Republican thing. 🙄
Then again Uvalde County reelected the same Sheriff the DOJ blamed for mishandling the Robb Elementary massacre. The Uvalde Sheriff ran unopposed by Democrats. Gah!

TFG has become even more of a polarizing figure than he was. That should work in our favor, along with the dawning realization that Biden has done a great job, slurred speech and all.
Things are changing. I just hope it's enough.
Vote.
