The Dangerous Parallels Between Nazi Germany and Greg Abbott's RNC Speech

Understanding how the echoes of scapegoating and mass deportation mirror dark chapters of human history.

https://www.lonestarleft.com/p/the-dangerous-parallels-between-nazi

In the early years of Nazi Germany, the seeds of genocide were sown through a series of policies that targeted Jews and other minorities. Initially, the Nazi regime did not turn to the horrors of extermination camps. Instead, they began with rhetoric that scapegoated these groups for Germany’s economic and social woes, followed by policies aimed at forcibly relocating them.

Adolf Hitler and his followers implemented discriminatory laws that stripped Jews of their rights and livelihoods. The infamous Nuremberg Laws of 1935 legally marginalized Jews, segregating them from the rest of German society. These measures were coupled with violent pogroms, like Kristallnacht in 1938, which saw Jewish businesses and synagogues destroyed and thousands of Jews arrested and sent to concentration camps.

During this period, the Nazis also explored various schemes for mass deportation. One of the most notable was the Madagascar Plan, which proposed relocating European Jews to the island of Madagascar. Although this plan was never executed, it manifested the regime’s early strategy of forced relocation. These actions were preludes to the more systematic and horrific genocide known as the Holocaust, where six million Jews were murdered.

The parallels between this dark chapter in history and Governor Greg Abbott’s speech at the RNC are unsettling.

I suspect that one of the reasons for border-state Republicans making immigration an issue is because of the demographic changes taking place in Texas and other border states. Euro-Americans (Americans primarily of European descent) were once the majority in Texas and Euro-Americans still provide the majority of the Texas Republican Party's membership.

That's not true anymore. Latinos are now the largest plurality in the Lone Star State and more and more of them are of voting age each year. A part of this shift might be due to immigration, but a lot more of it is due to natural increase: Latino babies born to American citizen-parents. I suspect that that's something the Radical Right doesn't want to believe in: instead, they want to believe that the demographic shift is solely due to immigration and that if those Latino folks would just go away, Texas would be majority-white again and the Texas Republican Party would rein supreme.

That isn't going to happen. Not unless some of the worst elements in the Texas Republican Party get their unspoken wishes and police and National Guard expell Texas Latinos from Texas and the rest of the US, whether they possess native-born citizenship or not.

Texas Republicans are aging quickly, too. For the most part, young Texans aren’t buying what they’re selling.

Fastest growing group in Texas: Asian Americans

The Asian American population in Texas is growing fast.

Asian Texans made big gains from 2022 to 2023, growing faster than any other racial group in the state, according to data released by the U.S. Census Bureau on Thursday. Their numbers increased by 5.5%, or 91,921, over the previous year's count. This was faster than the overall population growth of the state, which grew by 1.6%.

Locally, we are blessed with Filipino, Indian, Thai, Vietnamese and Viet Cajun restaurants. I’m not talking about San Antonio - I mean my sleepy little bedroom community. It’s wonderful to have something besides fried chicken and Mexican food. Don’t get me wrong, I love them both but these other cuisines are fabulous, too.
