VP Kamala Harris to speak at American Federation of Teachers Convention in Houston Thursday, White House says

I am back active with my county Democratic Party now that we have a new party chair. Last night we had a county executive committee meeting and there were at least 150 people there with standing room only for a decent size conference room. Last April, there was a county wide convention with less than 35 people attending.

There was a ton of enthusiasm for the ticket and the party. My county is already light blue but the GOP had been targeting selected seats and defeated a couple of judges in 2022. One of the judges who is being targeted spoke last night. The GOP is also targeting the tax assessor office because that office is on the local statutory election committee which supervises all elections. The GOP targeting selected races in my county and is getting nasty.

My area has two court of appeals jurisdictions that cover 10 counties (these counties account for 25% of the population of Texas). In 2018 my county helped elect enough judges so that the majority of each court of appeals are democrats. Nine of the Court of Appeals judges running were at the meeting and spoke. The GOP is pushing hard to take control of the court of appeals back.

It is going to be a nasty cycle. The daughter of the person running against Troy Nehls was abused by local police officers in a neighboring rural county. Nehls is in a heavily gerrymandered district, but the GOP may be worried and some rural police officers decided to be assholes towards the daughter of our candidate.

There is a ton of enthusiasm and there is hope to turn out enough vote to help Collin Allred win against Carnival Cruz.

I came home last night exhausted.

I saw this today and it appears that Texas will be getting attention from the Harris campaign

Vice President Kamala Harris will be in Houston Thursday to speak at the American Federation of Teachers' 88th Convention, according to the White House.

The convention is taking place at the George R. Brown Convention Center in downtown.

This visit comes as Harris is on the campaign trail for her presidential bid after President Joe Biden exited the race Sunday.

The White House said this keynote speech from Harris will be a "continuation of her consistent efforts to fight for workers across America, including as Chair of the White House Task Force on Worker Organizing and Empowerment."

According to its website, the AFT is a union of professionals that “champions fairness, democracy, economic opportunity and high-quality public education, healthcare and public services for our students.”

On Monday, AFT delegates “overwhelmingly” voted to endorse VP Kamala Harris as the Democratic party’s presidential nominee.
