Ex-Army worker dubbed 'Gucci Goddess' sentenced to 15 years for stealing $108.9M

A former civilian employee who stole nearly $109 million from the Army and used the money to live in luxury has been sentenced to 15 years in federal prison.

Janet Yamanaka Mello, 57, apologized in court for her crime — the largest theft in San Antonio history — minutes before U.S. District Judge Xavier Rodriguez handed down her sentence Tuesday.

“After all of my actions that were unlawful, foolish and just irrational, I have really tarnished the good reputation that I have worked for all my life,” she said. “I will forever be sorry, and I will continue to work to make things right.”

Mello pleaded guilty on March 7 to mail fraud and tax charges for the scheme, which went undetected by the Army for almost seven years.

She would have got away with it if she had stopped at $108.8 million. NT mahatmakanejeeves Jul 2024 #2
I don't think so. She had so many assets. She was flagged by the IRS. LeftInTX Jul 2024 #3

Is you have to keep going to the well.
You need to do a one of heist to get enough to go away after it.

Seven years to find the crime. Someone needs to look at their accounting system.

I couldn't believe all those vehicles. It's almost like they were hoarding them.

The flag lead to her being caught. She just couldn't keep her money straight!
