Campaign for Judge: 2 San Antonio Justices Compete for Same Seat in Election

San Antonio Court of Appeals Justice Luz Elena Chapa is facing a challenge to her Place 4 seat from the justice on the Place 3 seat of the same court.

Lori Massey Brissette, the former judge of Bexar County's 288th District Court, was appointed in July by Gov. Greg Abbott to fill the Place 3 position left vacant by the retirement of Justice Patricia Alvarez. Brissette had already chosen to run against Chapa when this occurred.

"I could not run for Place 3," said Brissette, who is the Republican option. "I was appointed to fill the term in Place 3 that expires in December. But because we were so far into the election cycle I could not switch my candidacy from place 4 to Place 3. If I had that choice I would not have chosen to challenge a colleague."

Chapa had not returned her Texas Lawyer voter guide questionnaire by the submittal deadline.
