Early voting ends in Harlingen City Commission runoff election

HARLINGEN — After coming out on top of a crowded field of candidates in the Nov. 5 election, three city commissioners are facing challengers in Saturday’s runoff.

By Tuesday’s close of an eight-day early voting period, 1,106 voters had cast ballots in the election in which Commissioners Michael Mezmar, Frank Morales and Rene Perez are counting on their supporters turning out to lead them to re-election.

“I think it’s a good showing,” Remi Garza, Cameron County’s elections administrator, said Wednesday, referring to the voter turnout.

While the Nov. 5 election, aligned with an historic presidential election, drove near-record numbers to the polls, the eight-day early voting period drew a bigger turnout than most runoffs, he said.
