RUN FOR SOMETHING: Michael Adams-Hurta for Appeals Justice, District 14, Place 7
Michael is a native Houstonian, lifelong Democrat, and experienced appellate attorney hoping to add a fresh perspective to the judicial decisions made by Texass 14th Court of Appeals.
Michael was born and raised in Houston, where he first fell in love with the Houston area and also developed his interest in how our government systems attempt to bring justice to the community. He became captain of his debate team at Lamar High School, excelling early in the art of argumentation as a way to seek the truth or the right result.
He also became interested in politics. By the time his former middle school debate teacher Jim Henley ran for Congress, Michael knew he was a Democrat and jumped on board. Michael would continue his political activism through college at the University of Texas and beyond, when he volunteered or worked for numerous Democratic politicians and elected officials. Michael even became president of UTs University Democrats club at the same time that future Democratic politicians were his classmates and members of the same organization.
Soon after, Michael went to law school, also at the University of Texas. During law school, he served as Articles Editor on the Texas Law Review and was a member of the schools U.S. Supreme Court Clinic, where he and his classmates helped secure a unanimous consumer-protection victory on behalf of homeowners.
Michael began his legal career working for two distinguished judges: the Honorable George P. Kazen, a federal district judge in the Southern District of Texas, and then the Honorable Eva Guzman, a justice on the Supreme Court of Texas. He is now a partner at Texass largest civil-appellate specialty law firm, litigating in the Fourteenth Court of Appeals or other appellate courts across Texas almost every day. Michael is Board Certified in Civil Appellate Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization, a distinction held by fewer than 1% of Texas attorneys. He has represented a wide variety of clientswhether they be anti-fraud whistleblowers, civil rights organizations, local companies, or even Democratic governmental officialsin various appellate courts throughout the state and country.
Michael lives with his wife Katie, their son Porter, and their dog Fig in a tight-knit neighborhood here in Houston. With his limited free time, he chases Porter around the house, plays games, and continues to fight for our democracyhe volunteered with the Harris County Democratic Party Voter Protection team for each of the last 3 general elections. He now looks forward to the opportunity to serve his community in a greater role.
