Denton City Council ballot set for May 2 election

Denton City Council candidate filings for the municipal election on May 2 closed on Friday with only one new candidate to file her campaign for the citywide Place 5 seat.

Erica Garland has decided to seek office again after losing by a small margin the citywide Place 5 seat to incumbent Brandon Chase McGee. Garland currently serves as a planning and zoning commissioner. She was appointed by Mayor Gerard Hudspeth, who also contributed to her campaign financially in 2024.

McGee decided not to seek reelection but instead pursue a Denton County justice of the peace seat.

Two other council members are ending their terms early to pursue other elected positions. Brian Beck is seeking the mayor seat, and Vicki Byrd is running for a Denton ISD school board sea
