Dallas' first black County Clerk will not seek re-election, embarks on a new chapter in life

DALLAS, Texas — There are many moving parts that keep a city running, systems working quietly behind the scenes, records preserved, milestones documented.

Inside the Dallas County Records Building, one of those steady forces is preparing to step away.

For nearly 20 years, John Warren has served as Dallas County clerk, becoming the first Black clerk in the county’s history. Now, as his term comes to an end in December, Warren has announced he will not seek reelection.

“We actually have our hands on the pulse of society,” Warren said of the office he has led for nearly two decades.
