More ballots have been cast in Texas through the first seven days of early voting for the 2026 midterms than any recent midterm or presidential election year, driven by high turnout in the Democratic primary.
That turnout is fueling optimism among Texas Democrats, who are once again trying to score their first election victory for a statewide office since 1994.
Through Monday, 665,664 votes were cast in-person and by mail in the Democratic primary, compared to 593,692 cast in the Republican primary, according to unofficial data from the Texas Secretary of State. The 1,259,356 votes is higher than both the 2024 and 2020 primaries through seven days of early voting, despite turnout typically being higher in presidential election years.
I would tell Democrats that they have every reason to feel optimistic, but that optimism should be interpreted as just meaning that they have a chance, said Jeffrey Engle, director of the Center for Presidential History at Southern Methodist University. Anyone who thinks that Democrats have a cakewalk to a blue wave is deluding themselves.

(10,629 posts)make or break you politically in Texas. For the "general election (statewide) whether you are a Christian or not, you better incorporate and emphasize "faith" in your political rhetoric or you can never get elected in this state and in reality it had better be Christian or Jewish - no atheist or Muslim allowed. It might be possible at the district level but no way in a statewide contest.
That is just a fact.
That is why I think Talarico has the best chance vs Crockett - although I like both a lot.

(36,226 posts)BUT I will also point out in the interest of harmony that Crockett is an experienced rep and she may be religious as well. If she does win the primary, she'd be wise to start talking about it (and maybe she already has). I'm more concerned about race/gender - knowing how these people are. Maybe I'm jaded, living down here in Ron Paul's old district, but I see a lot of bigotry etc.

(10,629 posts)the bigotry is for real, especially in rural areas. Also, there is somewhat of a clash between Hispanic/Black population because racism and bigotry is not confined to just white folks.
