Close race sends Hays County judge contest to runoff (D) election

HAYS COUNTY, Texas — Two familiar Hays County leaders are heading to a runoff election to determine who will represent the Democratic Party in the race for county judge.

Incumbent Hays County Judge Ruben Becerra will face Hays County Commissioner Michelle Gutierrez-Cohen in the May 26 runoff. Becerra, who has served two terms as judge, received 49.1% of the vote, while Gutierrez-Cohen, who represents Precinct 2, earned 45%. Both fell short of the 50% threshold needed to avoid a runoff, as Joel Martin collected about 5% of the vote.

“I have a magnificent, almost decade-long track record of doing what I say, not just writing it down on a paper,” Becerra said.

Gutierrez-Cohen said she’s eager to continue serving the community in a larger role.
