Related: About this forumSo I expanded my trip. I got 2 days in Escalante, 2 in Zion and 2 in Moab.
I am likely to book a couple of tours. I have suggestions for Escalante. Any thoughts or suggestions for the other two?
Things to look out for, safety wise, besides bring water?
I am 75 y.o. So I decided to take as many long trips as I can, while I still can.
2019 is Labrador.
2020 is Arizona, N.M.
2021 is Trans-Canada highway.
2024 is the total eclipse.

(2,317 posts)I just spent a week around Moab, visiting a variety of parks...Arches, Canyonlands, Dead Horse Mesa, over to Monument Valley. The altitude/thinner air totally exhausted me. I have lived my whole life at sea level. I grew up in Illinois, lived for 20 years in Texas, now live at the Beach in Virginia. I have to say the altitude is what kicked my butt.
The other thing I should mention: there are a lot of off-road tours offered. We took one and the terrain was extremely rough. We got shook around and bounced up and down and if you have any physical problems that could be exacerbated by that, don't do the off-road stuff. I went with my best friend, I am 70, she is 73, and I could tolerate it, but it did her some painful damage due to her arthritis.
Other than that....have fun!! I said Wow about 1500 times, I'm sure!
We stayed at some funky little hotels along the way that were charming, The Red Stone Inn in Moab was rustic and very affordable but comfy.

(5,196 posts)If you feel physically up to seeing interesting parts of the world, by all means make it happen.
I'm seven yrs older than you, loved to travel, but no longer feel it's prudent to go distances by myself.
Plus, other family or life events can come along, unexpectedly, as happened to me, when a younger family member became disabled, and it became my mission to assist there as much as able.
Report to us on your trips, and keep planning. I'd love to hear about Labrador, as plans and trip progress.

(13,400 posts)There is a road across the southern part of Lab. It goes from the ocean to Quebec.
It used to be a gravel road with potholes and whatever. It was paved two years ago. When you enter, you are loaned an emergency satellite radio in case you encounter an emergency. You turn it in when you leave the road.
Drivers are also advised to take a mounted full spare tire.
I have an emergency signal beacon so I probably won't need the radio but I will take it anyway.
I expect it will take three days for me to reach Labrador and the entire trip will take about 10 days. I will likely add stops to the trip. September is probably the best time to take that trip. Summer is mosquito heaven. August to early Sept. is black fly season.
I would leave around Sept 5th.

(1,116 posts)can be very hot in summer but so cool to see. It's almost like being on a different planet. It's a way out of the way, but get to it if you can. Enjoy your trip.
