Local Coffee Shop Subject of Employee Strike Over Wages, Would Like to Refuse Service to Police

if they feel threatened.

Apparently, the issue came to a head when two staff people were reprimanded (one eventually fired). One drew a pig on the police officers cup, the other wrote ACAB (all cops are bastards). Both were given a path to keep their jobs (and apologize). One did, one did not.

Picketers would like that staff rehired with a promise that if they feel threatened, they can refuse service to anyone, including law enforcement. There is nothing to suggest that the officer did anything threatening, it seems as though the employees felt threatened because he was an officer.

They make, with tips, between 15-18/hr. However, they would like 15 as a base salary plus tips. They would also like to review the private companies books, profits and salaries.

They delivered a typed demand letter and told the owners they had 11 hours to comply. When the owners asked to meet, they refused and called (a wildcat?) strike. Although they have PPE, they seem to want different quality PPE. (The demand letter cites several other issues)

The owners have temporarily closed the business while they try to sort out what to do.
