Rutland Herald owners announce sales agreement

The Mitchell family, decades-long owners of The Rutland Herald and the Barre-Montpelier Times Argus, announced plans to sell all their media properties to a Maine company, according to an article published online Wednesday night.

The article, penned by Rob Mitchell, editor-in-chief of both papers states that his Mitchell family has agreed to sell the the two Vermont papers and their smaller print and online publications, six websites and two free weekly papers, to a company led by publishing entrepreneur Reade Brower and printing and marketing executive Chip Harris.

The details of the agreement remained secret. Messages sent to Reade Brower and R. John and Rob Mitchell were not immediately returned.

R. John Mitchell, chairman and president of the Herald Association, was quoted by his son saying that his family felt they were unable to continue their mission and believed that Brower would be "a steward for the newspapers."
