Governor hopeful Scott accused of illegal ads

BURLINGTON — Republican gubernatorial candidate Phil Scott has been accused of breaking campaign finance rules by illegally coordinating with the Republican Governors Association on three television ads.

Attorney General William Sorrell is reviewing a complaint filed by the Vermont Democratic Party over the ads, which were produced by the RGA through its political action committee, A Stronger Vermont.

The complaint alleges that the type of close-up footage used in the ads suggests Scott’s campaign coordinated with A Stronger Vermont’s camera crew beforehand.

Brittney Wilson, Scott’s campaign manager, denied the claims and said it’s not hard to figure out where the candidate will be, since his events are publicized on the campaign’s website.
