Shumlin pushes new health care model

Vermont Gov. Peter Shumlin is traveling the state this week to pitch a new model for paying health care providers.

The governor has been working on getting federal approval to go forward with an all-payer model for about two years, and finally got approval last month. Shumlin said the all-payer model could save the state $10 billion over the next 10 years.

The governor was in Burlington on Thursday along with Green Mountain Care Board chairman Al Gobeille and Secretary of the Agency of Health and Human Services Hal Cohen to drum up public support for the all-payer model.

Under the all-payer model, providers are paid set amounts for care, rather than being paid per test, service or procedure. Shumlin received federal permission to proceed with the all-payer model last month.
