By Nathaniel Cline, ncline@loudountimes.com May 14, 2021 Updated 12 hrs ago
Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam (D) announced Friday afternoon that he will lift the universal indoor mask mandate for vaccinated people at midnight, according to a Friday tweet.
Fully vaccinated people will not be required to wear masks indoors or out, except on public transit, in health-care facilities or in congregate settings, in accordance with guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The state of emergency in Virginia will remain in place at least through June 30 to provide flexibility for local government and support ongoing COVID-19 vaccination efforts, a Friday release stated. Northam will take executive action to ensure individuals have the option to wear masks up to and after that date. Masks will continue to be required in K-12 public schools, given low rates of vaccination among children.

Virginia's restrictions on business capacity and social distancing will be lifted on May 28, weeks before the previously announced date of June 15.

Is the start of Memorial Day weekend.
Just a coincidence, right??

(5,119 posts)2. Yes, the date is a coincidence
But Virginia is making this decision based on steady vaccination rates and the falling number of Covid cases,. If cases spike or the vaccination rates drop off the cliff, you can bet that date will move out.

(60,740 posts)3. I'm going shopping today. I've had both shots. I'm wearing my mask.
I see Walmart isn't requiring shoppers who have had both shots (or will say that they have had both shots) to wear a mask.
Why am I still wary?

I've been fully vaccinated, but we still have new cases every day here and had two more deaths this week.
Mask on me in stores until further notice.
