Just When You Thought the VA Redistricting Commission Fiasco Couldnt Get Even Worse, It Looks Like It Is Doing Just ThatThe Virginia Redistricting Commission, fresh off completely failing to draw new districts for Virginia State Senate and House of Delegates (and nearly collapsing altogether), is now baaaaack and as bad as ever! Check out the latest lunacy, below, and yet again ask yourself why any Democrat supported the fatally flawed VA Redistricting Amendment last year, despite being warned over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over again NOT to support. At this point, as Del. Mark Levine wrote the other day, Everyone who advocated for Amendment 1 is at fault here I was up against millions of dollars in out-of-state Republican spending and some very naive Democrats who didnt believe me. Ugh.

(24,829 posts)everyone needs to relax. All we have to do is GOTV and all will be OK. I have been warning about this for months now because I see what Republicans have done in Pa. I will never see a Democrat win in my district, never again. Every year Democrats outvote Republicans and every year Republicans pick up seats and I am told by people here not to worry just get out the vote.
What about Texas where the GQP just gerrymandered Sheila Jackson Lee out of her district and into Al Greene's district? So I guess people in Texas just need to GOTV and decide if that vote should be for Lee or Greene? People need to wake up, every GQP controlled state is going to redistrict to pick up numerous seats, in other words the Democratic narrative going around in some districts to GOTV is just a joke because of gerrymandering. I understand we need to vote regardless, especially in hotly contested districts, but saying that "all we need to do is GOTV" is a losing strategy without passing S1.
If S1 is not passed Democrats can set a record GOTV and lose the House, I know this for a fact, I see it every election year in Pa.

(14,806 posts)allowing republicans to redistrict and gerrymander taking away POC's ability and right to vote is the only way they can keep power, i.e. just look at Texas and other red states.
Of course this will be rectified hopefully sooner than later but shit republicans are working over board. Same needs to apply concerning Democrat's working 24/7 to overcome these travesties. Democracy is not easy to keep alive, freedom isn't either, but heck, they are worth fighting for.

(24,829 posts)that this gerrymandering will be corrected? I see none.
Yes, Texas has grown leaps and bounds gaining minorities. Texas is the #1 state in the union in this regard and I guarantee you this, Texas will gain white representatives and lose minority representatives. Care to make a wager for charity?
Banking on Marc Elias to fix everything is a terrible strategy? Why, because Elias said so himself. Without federal guide rails, S1, Democrats are guaranteed to lose the House, IMO. Guaranteed, even if they have record turnouts.

(27,526 posts)If the commission doesn't draw the lines, the red-leaning state supreme court will (likely very close to these lines).
Who then do you appeal to? You could ask a federal district judge to overturn a state supreme court on racial grounds - and the 4th circuit might uphold it... but what chance is there of SCOTUS letting that stand?
The problem is... the map isn't particularly "gerrymandered" (certainly not when compared to the alternative proposed above). It just favors republicans because democrats "pack" themselves.

(34,484 posts)Its an important part of the equation and all we have right now.
Im far from giving up hope losing the house. Illinois carved out a gqp, as will CA and NY will carve out either one or two, and I guarantee it wont be Dems
Its a worry..but not going there
VOLUNTEER, DONATE, VOTE!!

(34,484 posts)Illinois released its map and everyone railed about unfair and gerrymandered it was..
Oh BS! We lost a district..did they think we should redraw it to favor the gqp. We are very blue! Besides, it really isnt that out of sync
