Professor Nikki Giovanni of The English Department at Virginia Tech, Sept. 4 2022

On Aug. 31, VTx reported that English Professor Nikki Giovanni is retiring after 35 years.

Giovanni is a renowned poet and writer, having published numerous works focusing on social issues, such as race and gender.

Giovanni’s career as a poet began during the Black Arts Movement when in 1968, she published her first poetry collection, “Black Feeling Black Talk.” The New York Times nicknamed her the “Princess of Black Poetry” the following year. Her work advocated for Black solidarity and revolutionary action.

According to Giovanni’s Curriculum Vitae, she first arrived at Virginia Tech as a Commonwealth Visiting Professor in 1987 before becoming an English professor two years later. She was eventually given the title of Distinguished University Professor in 1999.
