Rockingham County School Board Votes To 'Temporarily Remove' List Of 57 Books
By ASHLYN CAMPBELL Daily News-Record Jan 8, 2024 Updated 21 hrs ago
UPDATE: After a full list of titles was uploaded online, this story was updated to reflect that 57 books will be temporarily removed. Two titles were cut-off in the list initially provided by the board.
In its first regular meeting of the new year, the Rockingham County School Board came out of the gate swinging.
With three new highly political members and board member Matt Cross as the newly elected chair, the Rockingham County School Board voted to temporarily remove a list of library books and adopt the example guidelines as is from the 2023 Model Policies.
The changes from the board started early on in the meeting, with an invocation replacing the normally held moment of silence. The moment of silence has been in place since at least 2018, according to agendas from previous years, although Cross said the board used to hold invocations to open meetings.
As the chair of the board, I have decided we will follow suit with our local elected officials such as the Rockingham County Board of Supervisors, Cross said before giving the invocation I believe the majority of our community would agree with me we need Gods help the days that were living in.
