Martinsville citizens will vote for sales tax increase in November election

MARTINSVILLE, Va. (WFXR) The mid-term elections are quickly approaching, and in Martinsville, people will vote on more than just candidates.

During Tuesday night's city council meeting, council members approved a referendum for the November general election ballot that could lead to a 1 percent increase in the sales tax.

It's also referred to as a penny tax, because for every dollar you spend, it will cost you an extra penny.

"What this is, is this allows us to take it to the citizens to let them vote," Martinsville City Manager Robert Fincher said. "In order for them to vote in this upcoming election, it had to be done by July 28, so that's what this resolution is."
