U.Va. to extend spring break; Virginia Tech converts to online learning for remainder of school year

NEWS

U.Va. to extend spring break, begin online instruction March 19 in response to coronavirus

The University will reassess the situation after April 5

By Nik Popli | 03/11/2020

The University has extended spring break by three days and will begin remote instruction March 19, according to an announcement from University President Jim Ryan Wednesday afternoon.

The announcement said on-Grounds classes will be suspended for the "foreseeable future" due to the threat of coronavirus exposure, and all students are advised to remain at home or return to home if possible. The University will reassess the situation after April 5 and is prepared to hold online classes through the end of the semester.

In addition, the University is suspending all events that involve more than 100 people. These restrictions do not apply to athletic events or events at John Paul Jones Arena.

Virginia Tech converts to online learning for the remainder of the school year due to COVID-19 concerns

Ashley Long, editor in chief 22 hrs ago

Virginia Tech has officially made all classes online for the remainder of the semester due to risks from COVID-19, also known as the novel coronavirus.

However, according to the official statement, classes will not resume until Monday, March 23, in order to give students and faculty time to make the necessary adjustments.

Earlier this week, it was announced that eight cases of COVID-19 were confirmed in Virginia, several of which were in northern Virginia – the permanent residence for approximately 7% of the undergraduate class as of 2018.

Virginia Tech is among several other schools that have made this decision, with the number of universities or colleges cancelling in-person classes rising close to 100 as of Wednesday afternoon.

Campus will remain open and accessible, and Hokies can stay up-to-date on the university’s status through the designated Virginia Tech coronavirus page.
