738-foot coal ship runs aground near Naval Station Norfolk

NORFOLK — A 738-foot coal ship ran aground Wednesday night off Sewells Point. The Coast Guard ordered it to stay there Thursday.

The Hong Dai, a Panamanian-flagged ship reported running aground on the soft, sandy bottom about a quarter-mile northwest of Sewells Point — near Naval Station Norfolk.

The shipping channel remains open, according to Lt. Cmdr. Daniel Schrader, a Coast Guard spokesman. The ship had some coal on it and was on its way to pick up more.

There are 22 crew members on the ship. No one was injured and there were no reports of pollution or flooding aboard the ship, according to the Coast Guard.
