New Washington state law requires speed cameras in highway work zones

A new law aims to protect workers on Washington state highways.

Senate Bill 5272, which received unanimous support from the Washington state legislature, authorizes the use of speed safety cameras in state highway work zones to help increase worker safety. The legislation was signed into law by Gov. Jay Inslee on Tuesday.

“Folks working on our state highways deserve to do so with the peace of mind that they will end their shift by going home to their families and loved ones,” said Sen. Marko Liias (D-Everett), the author of the bill. “These workers are acting every day to ensure our highways are safe for commuters, and we have a duty to keep them safe as well.”

The law comes as the state has seen an uptick in traffic collisions and fatalities including in work zones. In 2021, there were 283 minor injury crashes, 28 serious injury crashes, and five fatal crashes in work zones, according to the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT).

I've seen 6 month projects extend for 3-4 years. Massive amounts of equipment, and only 3-5 workers, most of whom are leaning on shovels.

So glad we're protecting them.
