Landmark 'middle housing' law clears WA state Senate

Exclusionary zoning in Washington was dealt a huge blow Tuesday when the state Senate approved a bill that would allow small multifamily projects in single-family zones.

This wasn't the first shot at increasing housing in Washington, which most everyone agrees has a housing crisis.

The Puget Sound region alone needs nearly 700,000 new housing units by 2044 and current production is not on track to meet those needs, according to a report released last month by the state Department of Commerce.

She went on to say there’s still much more work to do. The House and Senate chambers will attempt to hammer out their differences and pass the final version before the session adjourns.
