Seattle council members propose law to prohibit public drug use

Seattle City Attorney Ann Davison and Councilmembers Sara Nelson and Alex Pedersen proposed legislation Thursday to prohibit the use of drugs in public places.

This comes after the state Legislature failed in the recently ended regular session to approve a bill that would have addressed Washington's drug possession laws. They were upended by the state Supreme Court's 2021 Blake decision.

Justices determined a portion of the simple drug possession statute crime is unconstitutional. Lawmakers last year approved a temporary fix, but the temporary law will sunset in July.

Gov. Jay Inslee says a fix to make local actions like Seattle's unnecessary is on the horizon.
