FareStart to lay off 20% of its workforce as Covid-era funding dwindles

Seattle-based nonprofit FareStart is laying off 20% of its workforce.

Founded in 1992, FareStart provides culinary job training and food assistance, while operating a cafe and private event space in South Lake Union. Most of those affected by the layoffs are involved with FareStart's prepared meal program, which is being reduced after losing much of its Covid-era funding.

"This was an extremely difficult decision that our we were saddened to make, and one that wouldn’t have been made unless we felt it was absolutely necessary to ensure FareStart retains its financial stability after a hard-hitting pandemic and ongoing impacts from inflation," interim CEO Nicole Trimble said in a news release.

Laid-off employees will receive severance, earned time off payouts and career support. The Seattle Times reported about 38 employees were affected.
