Storm co-owner's Interbay property to host region's first safe parking lot for RVs

The Low Income Housing Institute on Friday said it's establishing a safe lot in Seattle's Interbay neighborhood for people who live in recreational vehicles.

Salmon Bay Village will be just south of the Ballard Bridge at 3435 15th Ave W. A limited liability company managed by Seattle Storm co-owner Ginny Gilder owns the property.

People living in cars and RVs is a huge issue across the country, including in King County, where five years ago vehicles became the primary shelter for just over half of the people who slept outside of the shelter system, according to the King County Regional Homelessness Authority.

Despite this, RHA says there are just 147 safe parking spots, all for cars, none for RVs. One reason is that siting safe lots has proven nearly impossible.
