Dry, warm weather means Snohomish County road work galore

There’s never really a convenient time for drivers to have road work close lanes or routes.

After all, the greatest asset of driving solo is the convenience, or at least the perceived convenience. When something — a road project, a holiday weekend rush, a car crash that snarls traffic, someone with an inexplicably time-consuming drive-thru order — gums that up, it can raise the blood pressure of the most saintly driver.

To that end, there’s bad news with road work projects hitting their stride this month and through the rest of spring and summer, maybe even into early fall if the rainy season starts late. The upside is that it means dry, warm weather is in the forecast, though even too much of that is obviously a danger.

Work is underway on the high occupancy vehicle (HOV) lane extension for northbound I-5 between Everett and Marysville along with the Highway 529 interchange overhaul. It’ll mean a long-term shift for the current Highway 529 ramps in and out of Marysville and some lane closures on I-5.

They are repairing and repaving Mt. Baker Highway again. It will be mid-September before they are finished. Mt. Baker Highway is a two lane road that curves, swerves with ups and downs galore.

It is the only road to access Mt. Baker and summertime is here, so lots of hikers, kayakers, backpackers, camping enthusiasts, astronomers, fishermen, wildlife photographers and just plain tourists from BC are about to descend upon us again.

Welcome one and all, and bring your patience. The job of these WA DOT road work laborers is a long, hot, nasty, sun-scorched, dust-inhaling, throat-parching, dehydrating, physically-exhausting thing. They can only move as fast as the job allows, so please remember to smile, wave and be kind. You wouldn't want to do that job, trust me.

Thank you WA DOT road crew guys and gals. Without you, this highway would fall and break into pieces and pot holes big enough to swallow a Mack truck. You perform a difficult and demanding task that benefits everyone and yet you get little in the way of compliments, more likely third finger salutes and a lot of obscenities. But bless you, everyone of you.
