Climate Pledge Arena certified as world's first zero-carbon venue
Nearly two years after the Seattle Kraken played their first home game, their cutting-edge venue, the Climate Pledge Arena, has become the world's first arena to attain zero-carbon certification.
The certification, from Seattle environmental nonprofit International Living Future Institute, follows an audit of the arenas construction, materials and projections for 50 years worth of operations.
This is a significant undertaking, especially for as large and complex a project as Climate Pledge Arena, ILFI CEO Lindsay Baker said in a news release Monday. We are thrilled to see the arena become the first arena to achieve this.
To qualify under the program, projects must offset all carbon emissions associated with construction and materials as well as from operational energy use and demonstrate a years worth of net-zero carbon operations. Carbon offsets must come from one of a few verified renewable energy providers and be certified by a third-party program.
