Off-duty pilot on Everett flight tried to shut down engines

A Horizon flight to San Francisco diverted to Portland. Joseph Emerson was booked into jail for 83 counts of attempted murder.

EVERETT — A Horizon Air flight out of Everett made an emergency landing Sunday at Portland International Airport after an off-duty Alaska Airlines pilot traveling on the flight deck tried to shut down the plane’s engines.

The off-duty pilot, who was traveling in the flight deck’s jump seat, tried unsuccessfully to tamper with the engines’ operation on Horizon Air flight 2059, according to an Alaska Airlines statement.

The flight took off from Seattle Paine Field International Airport at 5:25 p.m. and was due to land in San Francisco at 7:30 p.m. The flight diverted to Portland, landing there at 6:36 p.m., according to information from FlightTracker.
