Port, Tacoma Schools plan $73M maritime skills center on waterfront site

The Port of Tacoma and Tacoma Public Schools are teaming up to develop a $73 million maritime center along the city’s Thea Foss Waterway.

Two buildings are currently planned for the Port Maritime Center at 1203 E. D St. — one for each organization — but designs could change to include some shared spaces.

The port wants a 60,000-square-foot building that houses offices and about 150 port and Northwest Seaport Alliance employees. Plans call for a lobby, office space and conference rooms of various sizes, including Port Commission meeting chambers.

Tacoma Public Schools' project will be a 30,000- to 35,000-square-foot facility to house its planned Maritime | 253 skills center, according a bid request published in the Construction Journal in June. The building will accommodate up to 300 students and include classroom and lecture spaces, as well as lab, workshop and collaborative project work areas and office space.
