Seattle City Council passes historic plan to reduce building emissions

The Seattle City Council on Tuesday passed legislation, which enacts a Building Performance Emissions Performance Standard, or BEPS.

The standard sets targets and timelines for the owners of large buildings to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

According to city data, existing buildings account for 37% of Seattle's total core emissions, ranking them third behind cars and aviation.

It's estimated around 4,135 buildings will be affected, including 1,650 nonresidential buildings, 1,885 multifamily buildings and 600 buildings on campuses, like universities, and hospitals. Buildings used for industrial and manufacturing purposes are exempt.
