In Wenatchee Valley, seniors in need of affordable housing face long waits and cultural barriers

In Wenatchee, Garden Terrace and other low-income senior housing facilities are overwhelmed with demand, painting a complex picture of the city’s multicultural, yet unevenly served, population.

Despite the diversity, affordable senior-housing units are predominantly occupied by white residents, with only a small fraction belonging to Latino and other minority communities. This disparity invites a deeper inquiry. Is this an issue of affordability, accessibility, cultural preferences or perhaps a combination of all three? The answers to these questions could reveal much about the social and economic dynamics at play in Wenatchee.

Currently, every low-income housing option through Garden Terrace and the housing authorities of Chelan and Douglas counties have a long waitlist.

Housing turns over less frequently, and seniors tend to stay in place much longer. There’s a risk of homelessness for those who can’t afford to rent at market rates, said Alicia McRae, the executive director of the Housing Authority of Chelan County and the City of Wenatchee (CCWHA).

not indexed to seniors' special costs and needs, and not keeping up with the way prices are rising (I'm speaking specifically of food and meds), we're seeing all the bad old times seniors went through prior to SS come to pass once again. If trump is installed back as Prez, and/or if we don't win both houses of Congress, we're going to see it get a lot worse for todays (and tomorrows) seniors. It's extremely worrisome. For the first time since my retirement, I've not gotten med refills... not because the cost was too high, but because the cost of insurance, etc, has gone up so much it doesn't leave much of anything for food or anything else. I realize this month is an anomaly for me... to be revisited once again this year... where house insurance, car insurance, car tags and property tax, all come due in the same month. It's been a long time since my early 20's when I last went to bed and got up for the next day hungry. Difference is, I'm old and disabled now. The jobs don't come so easy, and what offers do come seem to all be scams. It's all so discouraging. And downright frightening to think what it'll be if/when T is installed. Notice I do NOT say "elected." I firmly believe that won't happen. I have less faith SCOTUS will not just declare him Prez, as they did Bush the Younger.
