Saks Off 5th confirms closure of Westlake Center store

Downtown Seattle will soon lose another national retailer in a marquee space.

On Monday, Saks Off 5th confirmed plans to close its 36,000-square-foot store at Westlake Center on July 20, after more than six years at the mall.

"Through the regular course of business we continually evaluate store performance and other factors, and, from time to time, may determine it necessary to close a store," a spokesperson said in a statement to the Business Journal. "After careful consideration, Saks OFF 5TH has decided to close its Seattle, Washington location."

Founded in 1990, Saks Off 5th is an offshoot company of luxury department store chain Saks Fifth Avenue. It off-price brand operates more than 100 stores worldwide. Saks Off 5th opened on the third floor at 400 Pine St. in October 2017, pledging apparel and other merchandise from more than 800 leading brands for men, women and children.

Worse, it replaced a thriving and bustling food court (where I ate often) that included a mix of local businesses and national chains. It was a place you could get an affordable lunch with a nice view of downtown and the Monorail. After many years they finally put in a new food option (minus the view) of ridiculously expensive Asian food, starting at $18.

I think they thought it would be a good fit with H&M and Zara and the Rack. What a let down from when that area had three (then two) world-class department stores and an I Magnin.

I used to stop there every so often on my way to the Aquarium (I've been volunteering there for over 22 years now), and they had some very good options for a lunch if I left home early enough. Now I usually have a bite before I leave, or grab a BBQ Pork Hombow at Mee Sum. I also used to like to stop at Seattle Chowder, but they have gotten WAY too popular and there's usually a line going down Post Alley.

Come to think of it, I don't believe that I've been inside Westlake Center a single time since the food court went away.
