Initiative 2066 (putting Washingtonians at risk of higher energy prices) gets certified

The seventh in a slate of 2024 right wing initiatives promoted by the Washington State Republican Party and its affiliates was certified today, which means it is destined for the November ballot for approval or rejection by voters.

Initiative 2066, unlike the other measures in the slate, is an initiative to the people, not an initiative to the Legislature. It was primarily funded by the Building Industry Association of Washington, one of the state’s most notorious right wing lobby groups, with multimillionaire Brian Heywood’s Let’s Go Washington political committee providing infrastructure and logistics to support the signature drive.

I‑2066 seeks to hinder efforts to move Washington communities away from petroleum gas, a dirty and dangerous energy source, partly by barring regulations to exclude gas from being included in new construction. NPI is opposed to I‑2066 because:

It has the potential to increase Washingtonians’ costs
It seeks to delay and disrupt our transition to a clean energy economy
It disregards the latest scientific research showing that gas use harms human health
It would make many new homes less safe
It may not be constitutional
