Dave Upthegrove briefly moves into second place, narrows deficit with Sue Kuehl Pederson for Lands Commissioner on third

day of counting

Democrats’ hopes of thwarting a pending lockout in the crucially important downballot race for Washington State Commissioner of Public Lands rose today, as King County Council Chair Dave Upthegrove, the top vote-getting Democrat, demonstrated that he may have enough support in the late ballots to lock down second place by certification.

As of press time, Upthegrove had narrowed Sue Kuehl Pedersen’s lead to 1,719 votes, down from 10,222 yesterday, a significant improvement.

Upthegrove briefly led Kuehl Pederson statewide after King County uploaded its Thursday tabulation to the state’s central system, but relinquished that lead once smaller counties where Kuehl Pederson is getting more support reported in.

King County, home to over 30% of the state’s electorate, has 121,000 ballots estimated on hand to process, a number barely less than what it reported having on hand yesterday. The statewide total stands at 422,538 estimated ballots to be processed.
