Lumen Field will host FIFA Club World Cup 2025 matches
Seattle has once again claimed a spot on the international soccer stage.
On Saturday, FIFA announced Lumen Field as one of 12 venues in 11 cities to host matches for the 2025 Club World Cup, an international soccer tournament that features club or franchise teams. The Sounders qualified for the tournament by winning the 2022 CONCACAF Champions League title (now the CONCACAF Champions Cup) and will play three group-stage matches at Lumen Field next summer.
Hosting the FIFA Club World Cup at Lumen Field is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for our fans and our organization," Sounders owner Adrian Hanauer said in a release. "Never before have we faced the worlds top club sides in expanded competitive play, and the fact that the first edition of this new tournament is being played in our country and our city is historic.
Similar to the FIFA World Cup but with club teams rather than national teams, the Club World Cup is debuting an expanded 32-team format next year, up from seven teams in years prior.
