Elected leaders condemn arson attacks on ballot drop boxes; counties and state increasing physical security measures
A spate of arson attacks on ballot drop boxes in Portland and Vancouver early yesterday morning has drawn a strong response from elected leaders, law enforcement officers, and election workers, who are jointly prioritizing the deterrence of additional or copycat attacks that could destroy more ballots and discourage voter participation.
While the FBI investigates the attacks, elected leaders are trying to reassure voters that Washington and Oregons election systems are strong and resilient. Any voters in Clark County impacted by the arson attack there are urged to fill out a replacement ballot.
This was a violent attack on democracy, and we will do everything to keep our election system strong and secure in Washington, said Governor Inslee.
Our state and local election teams are fully dedicated to making sure every persons vote is counted fairly and accurately, his statement went on to say. There will be 24-hour enhanced security around ballot drop-off locations. While law enforcement investigates this incident, we urge concerned Vancouver-area voters to check with the Clark County Auditors office or VoteWA.gov for accurate information about how to obtain a replacement ballot or track their ballot once it has been returned. There are multiple ways for voters to cast their ballot and make sure their voice is heard.
