Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell files to run again next year

Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell is running for reelection.

His campaign filed paperwork Monday morning to run for a second term. If he wins, that would make Harrell Seattle's first two-term mayor since Greg Nickels, who left office at the end of 2009. In a campaign announcement, Harrell, 66, touted his work on public safety, homelessness, the fentanyl crisis and affordable housing, as well as his efforts to improve downtown activation.

"But there is more work to do — this is the time for proven leadership to stand up for our values and keep Seattle moving forward as a city that is welcoming, affordable, and safe," he said in a statement.

Harrell was first elected in 2021, defeating then-City Council President M. Lorena González with the widest margin for a nonincumbent mayor since the 1960s, as more centrist slate of council members swept into City Hall. His bid for reelection, however, comes amid some recent shuffling on the City Council.
