Former Clinton staffer to challenge Mooney for House seat

The former state director for Hillary Clinton’s 2016 presidential campaign announced her candidacy Wednesday for the U.S. House of Representatives in the second district.

Talley Sergent, 37, said she will run as a Democrat with the hope of ousting U.S. Rep. Alex Mooney, R-W.Va. She said Mooney turned his back on his constituents when he voted for the American Health Care Act, the GOP-supported repeal and replace bill for the Affordable Care Act, which will be at the forefront of her campaign.

“Alex Mooney is Washington through and through — he’s not one of us,” she said. “His vote to take away health care is clear evidence that he hasn’t heard his constituents’ concerns, doesn’t understand us, and puts his party’s interests over the best interest of the people of West Virginia.”

Sergent, a Huntington native, graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill before taking a job in then-senator Jay Rockefeller’s press office. She went on to work for the U.S. State Department, Coca Cola and Clinton’s campaign.
