Commission delays vote on reauthorizing Wheeling University

CHARLESTON — Members of the state board that oversee four-year colleges in West Virginia met Friday via conference call to decide if they would continue to allow Wheeling University to confer degrees.

The Higher Education Policy Commission delayed a vote on that decision, though, after the university was late giving the commission important information and after commission staff members learned during the meeting that the university’s president was put on administrative leave.

The private university is located in Wheeling. Members of the school’s governing board voted last month to officially change the name from Wheeling Jesuit University to Wheeling University and to appoint Ginny Favede as new chairwoman of the board.
