Controversial former justice wants back on Supreme Court

FAIRMONT – Richard Neely is not running for West Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals in spite of his age.

He is running because of his age.

“I’m running for the Supreme Court not in spite of the fact that I’m old, but because I’m old and I know how to run it. I know how it can be done, and I’ve done it,” said Neely, 78, who stopped by the Times West Virginian office this week.

Neely filed for pre-candidacy for a Supreme Court run as a Democrat in October, after having been a judge on the state’s highest court from 1973-1995, and having served as Chief Justice during that time. Since then, Neely – a Fairmont native – has been practicing law in Charleston, and decided to run once again because he believes the system has become inefficient.

“The court system really is in shambles,” Neely said. “Part of what I’m running on is the platform that we need to reform; there’s a lot of other problems in the court system.”
