Winter in summer: West Virginia weather station plummets to freezing.
Just 125 miles west of Washington, the mercury dipped to 31 degrees in Canaan Valley one of the coldest readings in the Lower 48 on Wednesday.
It was a cool, crisp morning with low humidity that hinted at fall on the third full day of summer in Washington and across the Mid-Atlantic.
Only 125 miles west of the nations capital, it felt like winter.
An instrument station on the floor of Canaan Valley in West Virginia registered a morning low of 31 degrees. By comparison, it was 57 at Washingtons Reagan National Airport and 49 at Dulles International, the coolest temperature readings at those sites on June 23 since 1992.
Canaan Valleys chilly number was no fluke or misregister. The same site, operated and maintained by Virginia Tech, recorded freezing lows twice last week during a similar sweep of Canadian air across the eastern United States to disrupt summers stickiness. And 16 consecutive mornings in May.
Wednesdays morning low at Canaan Valley was only one degree above the National Weather Services coldest temperature in the 48 contiguous states: 30 degrees at Mount Washington, N.H.
