Registered Republicans surpass Dems in Boone County, WV, for first time; Dems keep focus on turnout
West Virginia Republicans celebrated a victory last week as their voter registration totals in Boone County outpaced those of Democrats for the first time in history, but Democratic Party leaders say party registration is only part of the story.
According to the state Republican Party, there are 4,892 Republicans registered in Boone County as of last week compared to 4,887 Democrats a difference of five voters. State Republican Party Chairman Josh Holstein said that the new voter data more recent than the last tally posted by the Secretary of States Office was collected by the Boone County clerk.
In a news release last week, the state GOP called the change in registration makeup in Boone County, which is a historic Democratic stronghold, transformative and reflective of a profound political realignment in the state.
The momentum is overwhelmingly in our direction, this is a majority Republican state and were growing month over month (in registration), said Del. Holstein, R-Boone, in an interview with West Virginia Watch.
