West Virginia man awarded $5.1 million in family business feud case

A West Virginia jury has awarded $5.1 million to a Wheeling man who accused his siblings of forcing him out of the family business at a discounted price.

The award will be reduced by the amount the other family members have already paid to Kevin P. Coyne, who was terminated in 2012 as an employee of Tri-State Petroleum.

The company was founded in 1974 by his father, Edward J. Coyne Sr. The Wheeling-based business owns Marathon gas stations and convenience stores in Western Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Ohio as well as other interests.

Kevin Coyne accused his sister, Upper St. Clair attorney Colleen C. McGlinn, and his other siblings of buying out his 20 percent stake in the family business for less than it was worth. He also accused them of secretly transferring real estate in Oakland and Bridgeville that was owned by the family business to new companies that they owned, but that he did not have interest in.
