Another huge mistake not getting Russ Feingold elected.....Judgeship vacant for years

Last edited Thu May 10, 2018, 05:18 PM - Edit history (1)

until Turtleman and ROJO had a Repub President.......

The Senate voted Thursday to confirm Michael Brennan to a lifetime seat on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 7th Circuit ― a vacancy that Republicans prevented President Barack Obama from filling for six years.

The vote, 49 to 46, was entirely partisan.

Until now, the seat was the nation’s longest circuit court vacancy. It was empty since January 2010, and it had been up to Wisconsin’s two senators to work with the White House to fill it. The reason it went unfilled for so long largely came down to one person: Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.).

Obama nominated Victoria Nourse to the seat in July 2010. Johnson denied her a confirmation hearing for all of 2011 by refusing to turn in his so-called blue slip, a Senate tradition whereby home-state senators have the ability to stop or advance a judicial nominee in the Judiciary Committee. Nourse withdrew her nomination in early 2012, calling the system “broken.”

1. Feingold lost in 2010 because too many on the Left could not be bothered to vote.

And here in Wisconsin, Walker was elected governor and the entire state flipped from Democratic to Republican control.

and handed it over to Republican control which allowed them to gerrymander the state when they took power in 2011.

8. After Feingold's loss I had a suspicion that he was looking to 2016 to get revenge on Johnson.

He would have been a good candidate with statewide recognition to have run against Walker in 2014 rather than the Democratic candidate we had whose only elected experience was to a school board.
But in 2010 here, Walker got 90% of the votes that went to McCain in 2008 while his Democratic opponent, Tom Barrett, only got just over 65% of Obama's vote total.
Republicans tend to vote as if it was their duty while too often the Left are fickle voters who need to be excited and motivated to show up.

5. The campaign also overestimated it's brand.

Democratic voters in their 40s and up mostly remember Feingold well. Younger voters, not so much. I know I have said this before, but unless we want to repeat this scenario, us Dems in WI need to huddle up and refine the statewide message, including outreach to new and occasional Dem voters. Unfortunately I am not able to attend the party convention on June 1-2, but we in Eau Claire just elected four new younger progressives, 3 of them women, remaking the city council. We need to let go of old disputes and embrace the now, or greet 4 more years of Republican control. Who are you supporting for governor and how will you help their campaign? I am torn between Dana Wachs and Kelda Roys (sorry if misspelled).
